When it comes to the war on bad skin, wrinkles are public enemy number one.

And while it may not be a priority for you if you’re young, the fact is that wrinkles are a LOT easier to prevent than they are to treat.

So if you’re looking to build a solid skin care routine, it’s important that you understand a.) what causes wrinkles, and b.) what to do about it.

The Science Behind Wrinkles

Before we talk about how wrinkles form, let’s get a better idea of what they actually are.

Basically, your skin is bound and held together by a group of proteins, known as “collagen” and “elastin”.  These are what give the skin its structure and keeps everything nice and tight.

And while these two proteins are constantly being regenerated in your body, this process gradually begins to slow down as you age.

The end result is that, as the body produces less and less collagen and elastin, the skin begins to lose it’s firmness, causing it to sag and produce wrinkles.

What Causes Wrinkles?

The short answer is that wrinkles are caused by the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin.

The long answer is that the loss of these two proteins can be sped up or slowed down by a number of lifestyle factors.

There are a few different ways collagen and elastin can be broken down.  The main one is through the production of enzymes that degrade the protein over time.  One of the main culprits is an enzyme called “elastase”, which acts against elastin.

Another major cause is inflammation.  Inflammation is particularly detrimental to your skin, because it promotes another enzyme called “collagenase” which…yup, you guessed it – breaks down collagen.

Tips For Preventing Wrinkles

So, which “lifestyle factors” can you start putting in place to slow down the loss of these two precious proteins?

If you want to prevent wrinkles from forming, there are a few things you can start doing immediately:

Tip #1 – Wear Sunscreen

While we all love getting a tan in the summer, it’s important to remember that the sun is one of the number one causes of elastase production, and therefore one of the number one causes of wrinkles.

If you do plan on spending time in the sun, make sure you keep it in moderation.  You should also make sure you choose a quality sunscreen to protect yourself and wear UV filtered sunglasses (the skin under your eyes will thank you).

Tip #2 – Avoid Inflammation

There are a number of reasons your skin may be inflamed.  Smoking cigarettes is a major one, as is drinking excessively, so if you regularly do either one of those things, make sure you get it under control now.

Diet is also an important factor.  Foods like sugar, processed meats and artificial fats have been shown to promote inflammation in the body.  Try your best to avoid these unhealthy foods, and replace them with healthy fruits, vegetables, and quality fats like Omega 3’s.

Tip #3 – Get More Collagen

Remember, a loss of collagen as we age is a perfectly normal phenomenon – but that doesn’t mean you can’t do things to slow the process down.  By choosing a product like Dermavix, as well as supplementing with collagen and eating more foods rich in this protein, you’ll go a long to keeping your skin young and wrinkle free.
