When it comes to taking care of yourself, there’s no doubt about it – we all have a lot on our plate.  From working out, to eating right, to getting enough sleep, self-care can be a tough thing to manage.

And for a lot of people (especially if you’re young), skin care tends to rank toward the bottom of everyone’s list in terms of priorities.

This is a HUGE mistake.  If you’re a young person (or even a relatively young person), and you’ve been neglecting your skin, you really need to change gears and start making it a priority.

Here are a few reasons why:

Reason #1 – Wrinkles Are A LOT Easier To Prevent Than Treat

One of the main cosmetic concerns when it comes to skin care and ageing are wrinkles.  And one of the main causes of this is a diminished amount of collagen as we age.

While there are steps you can take once the wrinkles take hold, it’s SO MUCH easier to deal with this BEFORE they start by treating your skin well and getting on a solid skincare routine.

Reason #2 – You’ll Look (And Feel) Better

This one’s pretty obvious, but it’s worth repeating – keeping your skin healthy will not only make you feel better, it will make you look better too.

Looking in the mirror and seeing healthy, radiant, glowing skin is infinitely better than seeing a face that looks tired, dull and is starting to show more signs of ageing than it should.

Reason #3 – Your Skin Is An Organ

When it comes right down to it, your skin isn’t just something pretty to look at – it’s a vital organ.  Strong, healthy skin acts as a barrier between you and the outside world, protecting you both from the elements as well as harmful environmental toxins.

What You Should Start Doing Now

So, if you want to start getting serious about your skin, what are some step you should start taking now?

While a good skincare routine will look slightly different depending on the individual, there are a few steps we recommend EVERYONE start implementing.

Step #1 – Start Moisturizing

Seriously, if you’re not moisturizing, you need to start.  Not only will your skin feel softer, it will also improve your complexion, and prevent the appearance of fine lines.

Step #2 – Be Careful Of The Sun

While you shouldn’t avoid the sun altogether, you really do need to be careful about how much time you spend catching some rays.  Remember, exposure to UV rays is directly tied to a loss of collagen, and is a major cause of wrinkles and premature ageing.

You should also seriously consider a proper sunscreen if you’re planning to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Step #3 – Stop Smoking And Drinking

Along with prolonged sun exposure, cigarettes and excessive alcohol consumption are absolutely TERRIBLE for your skin.  They’re one of the leading causes of inflammation, a process that’s responsible for the denigration of the collagen and elastin proteins that keep you looking young.

Not worth it.

Step #4 – Eat Better

While drinking, smoking and burning your skin are by far the worst causes of inflammation, eating a poor diet certainly doesn’t help.  If you haven’t already, start avoiding processed foods, and start replacing them with a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.
